The 2017 Design Problem

A prominent Pacific Northwest university is opening a new leading edge modern art museum.  The Museum has commissioned you to design a light fixture to illuminate the entry lobby.  The light fixture is a signature piece, but it is also functional.  The lobby is used for social gatherings, public lectures, special events, and art display of objects that are not light sensitive.  This is a large lobby with a 16’ high ceiling.  The architectural design of the space is up to you.  The Museum has stipulated that the light fixture(s) will be floor mounted and provide adequate light for general circulation; it does not need to specifically light art.  It should be durable because there will be lifts involved in changing the artwork.

Take into consideration the volume of the lobby and that it should be a comfortable place for people to gather.  People and architecture should look good so color quality is important.  The Museum is located in Washington state and energy use is an important consideration, so your fixture should use energy-efficient light sources.  Describe how the luminaire is controlled, and whether it is able to provide different settings for different uses of the lobby.  Do not use self-ballasted lamps and other retrofit lamps that fit into incandescent screw base sockets.   Identify all major components and materials of the fixture.  Document the fixture as instructed under the Competition Rules.
