2027 Design Problem

You have been hired to design the light fixture over the entry check-in counter at a Community Swim Center. The Center is an active community hub hosting classes, competitive swim meets, lap swimming, and family swim throughout the year. The Center can also be rented out for pool parties and youth camps. It caters to both children and adults. Management wants to clearly identify the check-in counter, welcome swimmers of all ages and convey a unique identity. The light fixture will be a prominent feature, but it also must be functional.

The check-in counter is in an interior space and the entry ceiling is at least 11’ high. The architecture is up to you. Take into consideration the light distribution, energy use, and maintenance of the fixture. Consider the durability of materials in this corrosive, humid environment. Consider how the design of the fixture and quality of light will make the space feel and how people will look under the light. How does the light fixture meet the requirements of the program and welcome the facility users? The light fixture design may be a single fixture or a series of the same fixture. Identify all major components and materials of the fixture. Document the fixture as instructed under the Competition Rules.
